(City knighthood): Old Istanbul’s tough-man culture was akin to a kind of “knighthood”.  Istanbul’s “knighthood” had its own informal chivalric codes and accepted ways of functioning, and conforming to these codes was the foremost requirement of being a tough-man.

Solak (“Leftie”) Ligor (1908):  Todori Efendi was a famous tailor living in the neighbourhood of Fener.  However, his son Ligor, due to an impairment in his right hand, was unable to carry on his father's profession and started on a course of rogue behaviour. Ligor tried to compensate for the deficiency of his right arm with his left arm, and soon began to handle a knife with a terrific velocity. His fame spread from Balat to Unkapanı. He became the unrivalled tough-guy in the district from there to Eyüp for four years.
